Gastric balloon in Türkiye

How does the gastric balloon help in losing weight?

The gastric balloon offers a temporary, removable, “back to normal” and surgical-free method of weight loss for overweight and obese people.

One study showed that 81 overweight and obese people lost an average of 20 pounds over five to seven months. In a second study, 19 obese people lost an average of 29 pounds in six months.

During the procedure, a deflated silicone balloon is inserted through the mouth and into the stomach. There it is filled with saline or air and is about the size of an orange. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold, making the patient feel full faster and eat less.

Gastric balloons may help people lose weight before they reach obesity.

In some countries, the National Institutes of Health requires that healthy people have a body mass index of 40 or higher to be eligible for weight-loss surgery . People with a BMI of 35 or higher and those with existing conditions such as diabetes and sleep apnea are also considered candidates for the surgery.

One of the researchers adds that the balloon approach may also be useful as a temporary bridge for obese patients who need non-emergency surgery. By helping a person reach a safer weight before undergoing surgery, the balloon may help reduce the risk of surgery complications and thus lower costs in the long run.

An obesity and diabetes doctor adds that improvements in balloon design since gastric balloons were first introduced in the 1980s have reduced the risk of complications such as perforation, making them more suitable for obese patients.

Who is the balloon procedure recommended for?

The researchers recommend the use of balloons (gastric balloon) for patients who suffer from overweight and obesity, especially for

  • Those who cannot shed pounds through diet and exercise,
  • Those who are not eligible for bariatric surgery
  • Those who are unwilling or afraid to undergo surgery such as gastric bypass or gastric banding.

Are there risks or side effects?

The balloon system was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration during clinical trials, and typical side effects included nausea and abdominal pain. Serious side effects were reported in less than 0.3% of cases.

How long does it take to recover after gastric balloon is placed and removed?

Both balloon placement and removal are non-invasive procedures, so they usually take very little time.

How does the water balloon help lose weight ?

Some doctors pointed out the other advantage of the gastric balloon is that there is no need for a hospital stay as the patient can go home three hours after the balloon is inserted.

and in a study of 84 patients using a water balloon filled with saline. The balloons deflated spontaneously in two patients. Another patient suffered a stomach rupture because he had hidden his chronic alcoholism from doctors.

In the remaining 81 patients, the average weight decreased, from an average of 220 pounds at the start of the study to an average of 200 pounds when the balloons were removed five to seven months later. And their BMI decreased from 36 to 32.6.

Overall, the patients lost an average of 9.18% of their starting weight.

The 14 patients with a mass between 27.6 and 30 at the start of the study lost 7.6% of their body weight.

And in most countries. People with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are classified as overweight, and people with a BMI of 30 or more are classified as obese.

One researcher says that the 17 patients whose BMI appeared to be 40 or greater lost 12.2% of their body weight. The researchers also add that about 10% of the patients failed to follow the dietary and exercise recommendations, and therefore did not follow the instructions well.

How does the air balloon help to lose weight?

Another study included 19 patients with an average BMI of 39.75. They used air balloons instead of water balloons. In six months, their BMI decreased by an average of 4.9 points and they lost an average of 29 pounds, according to some reports.

One of the patients suffered from a rare complication of gastric torsion, but there were no cases of bleeding or wounding.

Doctors explain that when you eat too much while the balloon is in the stomach, it may lead to severe nausea or vomiting. In general, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain have been successfully treated with oral medications.

Currently, balloons are left in the stomach for six months or a full year, depending on the type of balloon. It is hoped that at this point patients will continue to lose or maintain their weight through diet and exercise. But some may need another procedure.

*The air balloon may be easier to hold than the water balloon for some patients because it weighs less, but there are no studies comparing the two.

It is not recommended for “ morbidly obese ” patients, due to imaging complications that may occur, as it is advised to conduct x-rays for patients monthly to ensure that the balloon is not deflated.

What after gastric balloon removal

After the gastric balloon is removed, the patient must follow a customized diet and exercise program and consult with a dietitian for the coming months. The patient needs to maintain healthy eating habits and continue to exercise regularly to maintain weight in the long term.

The results of balloon therapy are very individual and depend largely on how strictly the patient follows the diet and exercise program.
