Tendon repair surgery in Türkiye

What is tendon repair surgery?

Tendon repair surgery is a surgical procedure performed to treat a torn or damaged tendon. Tendons are the thin tissues that connect muscles to bones. When muscles contract, tendons pull on bones and cause joints to move.

When tendons are damaged, movement may be severely limited. The affected area may feel tender or tender.

Tendon repair surgery may be beneficial for people with tendon injuries that make it difficult to move a joint or are very painful.

Common reasons for tendon repair surgery

Tendons are repaired to restore normal movement of the joint. A tendon injury may occur anywhere in the body where there are tendons. The joints most commonly affected by tendon injuries are the shoulders, elbows, ankles, knees and fingers.

A tendon injury is caused by a tear that goes through the skin and injures the tendon. Tendon injuries are common in contact sports such as football, wrestling and rugby.

Tendons can also be damaged in rheumatoid arthritis, causing them to rupture.

How is tendon repair surgery performed?

During tendon repair, the surgeon will:

  • One or more small incisions made in the skin over the damaged tendon
  • Suture the torn ends of the tendon together
  • Examination of surrounding tissues to make sure no other injuries, such as blood vessel damage, have occurred
  • Close the incision
  • Cover the area with sterile bandages
  • Immobilization or splinting of the joint to allow the tendon to heal

If there isn’t enough healthy tendon to reattach, the surgeon may perform a “tendon graft” by using a piece of tendon from another part of the body. For example, a tendon may be from a foot or a toe, and sometimes tendon grafting (moving the tendon from one area to another) can be helpful in restoring function.

Anesthesia is used during tendon repair to prevent the patient from feeling pain during the surgery.

The types of anesthesia used are:

  • Local anesthesia : The area where the surgery will be performed is numbed and pain-free.
  • Spinal anesthesia: The surrounding area and the area where the surgery will be performed are numbed, so it is pain-free.
  • General anesthesia: where the patient is unconscious (asleep) and unable to feel pain.

Possible risks of tendon repair surgery

Risks associated with tendon repair include:

  • Scar tissue, which may form and prevent joints from moving smoothly
  • Loss of some joint functions
  • Joint stiffness
  • Tendon re-rupture

Risks of anesthesia include difficulty breathing, rash, or itching. Risks of surgery generally include bleeding and infection.

Postoperative recovery and care

Tendon repairs are usually performed on an outpatient basis. This means that the patient can go home after the surgery. If the patient remains in the hospital, it is usually for a short period of time.

Recovery may take up to 12 weeks. The injured tendon needs to be supported with a splint or cast to avoid moving the repaired tendon.

Physiotherapy is usually necessary to restore movement in a safe manner. Movement often returns gradually with some stiffness.

The patient may need treatment after surgery to reduce scar tissue. Because the presence of a lot of scar tissue may make it difficult to move the damaged tendon.

Expectations about tendon repair surgery

Tendon repairs can be very successful if done in conjunction with appropriate physical therapy. The sooner tendon repair surgery is performed after an injury, the easier the surgery and recovery will be.

In some cases, long-term complications, such as long-term sclerosis, may occur. In other cases, some tendon injuries, such as flexor tendon injuries in the arm, may be very difficult to repair.
