Why is a breast biopsy performed?

A breast biopsy is performed to check for breast lumps and is requested in case the doctor is concerned about the results of a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI. Or if a lump is found during a physical exam or you notice changes in the nipple, including:

  • bloody secretions
  • dimpling of the skin
  • Nipple crusting.

What are the risks:

It’s a simple procedure with few risks, but some possible side effects of a breast biopsy include:

  • A change in the appearance of the breast (depending on the amount of tissue removed).
  • bruises
  • breast bulge
  • The mother is at the site from which the biopsy was taken.
  • An infection at the biopsy site.

The above effects are temporary, and if they continue, they can be treated, and following the doctor’s instructions greatly reduces the chances of infection.

How to prepare for a breast biopsy:

  1. The doctor should be informed of any allergies before the breast biopsy, especially any previous allergic reaction to anesthesia. He should also be informed about taking any medications, including over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin or nutritional supplements.
  2. Alert your doctor about the presence of any implanted electronic devices (such as a pacemaker ) before an MRI biopsy.
  3. Tell the doctor about the existence or suspicion of pregnancy .
  4. Wearing a bra at the time of the biopsy as it keeps the cold compresses given after the operation in place (they help reduce pain and inflammation).

How is a breast biopsy performed?

Mammogram

The doctor examines the patient’s breasts before performing a breast biopsy and includes:

  • physical examination
  • Ultrasound
  • mammogram
  • MRI examination

During one of these tests, the doctor may place a thin needle or wire in the area of the tumor so that the surgeon can find it easily.

Types of breast biopsies

There are several ways the surgeon can take a sample of breast tissue, including:

Fine needle biopsy

Fine needle biopsy:

The patient lies on the table, then the surgeon inserts a small needle and syringe into the lump, extracts a sample, then collects the tissue and fluid in the syringe, and finally the needle is removed.

Endodontic breast biopsy

Endodontic breast biopsy :

A fine-needle biopsy is similar, but the doctor uses a larger needle to collect several samples, each about the size of a grain of rice.

Haptic sampling:

Haptic sampling

This process is used when dealing with areas that cannot be felt, but can be seen through examination with a device

Mammogram. During the procedure, the patient lies face down on a perforated table, which enables the surgeon to work under the table while the breast is in a fixed position between two plates to make a small incision and remove samples with a needle or suction probe.]

MRI-guided fine-needle biopsy:

The patient lies facedown on a table with her breasts prolapsed and the MRI machine will provide images that guide the surgeon to the mass while making a small incision for fine needle biopsy

Surgical biopsy:

A surgical biopsy involves the surgical removal of a breast lump. The sample is then sent to a laboratory to examine the edges and to ensure that the entire lump is removed if it is cancerous .

After a breast biopsy

It is possible to return on the same day as the procedure. The biopsy site should be taken care of by keeping it clean and dressings changed frequently. If any of the following occur, the doctor should be contacted:

  • Fever over 38°C.
  • Redness at the biopsy site.
  • A feeling of warmth at the biopsy site.
  • fluids coming out
