What is gallbladder

The gallbladder is called gallbladder in English, and it is a small pear-shaped organ located in the lower side of the liver and works to store bile juice produced from the common hepatic duct for release through the common bile duct towards the duodenum, where the juice works to help break down and absorb fats.

Why do you eradicate

The gallbladder is removed to treat gallstones, which are solid deposits of bile materials that can get stuck inside the gallbladder and bile ducts, and their size ranges from a grain of sand to a golf ball, and leads to acute or chronic inflammation of the gallbladder accompanied by infection, in addition to causing flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and pain

gallstones

Your doctor may recommend gallbladder removal if:

  • gallstones.
  • Stones in the bile duct.
  • cholecystitis.
  • Large gallbladder polyps.
  • Pancreatitis caused by gallstones.

Risks of cholecystectomy

The procedure carries a small risk of complications including:

  • bile leakage.
  • severe bleeding.
  • infection.
  • Injury to nearby organs, such as the bile duct, liver, and small intestine.
  • Heart problems, such as a fast heart rate, heart attack, or heart failure.
  • An allergic reaction to anesthesia such as blood clots, pneumonia or other medicines.

How to prepare for an open cholecystectomy:

The patient undergoes several tests to ensure that he is healthy enough to undergo the procedure, including blood tests, imaging tests of the gallbladder, a chest X-ray or an EKG, and a complete physical examination.

The doctor should also be informed of any prescription or over-the-counter medications, nutritional supplements, and herbal mixtures that may interfere with the procedure. He should also provide full instructions on the best way to prepare for the surgery, including:

  • Stop eating and drinking four hours before surgery.
  • Shower with a special antibacterial soap.
  • Plan a hospital stay in the event of complications.

before the operation

The operation is performed under general anesthesia, by injecting anesthesia drugs through a vein in the arm, a tube is inserted down the throat to aid breathing, then the abdomen is cleaned with an antiseptic solution to reduce the risk of infection, after that the surgeon performs cholecystectomy using either laparoscopic or open surgery.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy:

The procedure begins with the surgeon making four small incisions in the abdomen and then inserting a tube with a camera through one of the incisions, allowing him a clear view on a monitor in the operating room while he uses surgical instruments inserted through the other incisions to remove the gallbladder. After that, imaging tests such as x-rays or ultrasound are performed to ensure that there are no other possible problems. Finally, the surgical incisions are sutured and the patient is transferred to the recovery area. The operation takes an hour or two.

Open cholecystectomy:

The surgeon makes a 15 cm incision in the abdomen below the ribs on the right side, then pulls the muscles and tissues back to reveal the liver and gallbladder, then the surgeon removes the gallbladder, sutures the wound, and transfers the patient to the recovery area, and the operation takes an hour or two

Laparoscopic surgery or open surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is preferred over traditional open surgery. This is because it is less invasive and the recovery time is usually shorter. However, some complications make the option of open surgery a better option, such as the severity of gallbladder disease, which makes the laparoscopic procedure more difficult due to the impact on the organs.

After cholecystectomy

The patient stays in the hospital for 3 days and is discharged after ensuring that his vital signs are stable and making sure that he does not suffer from severe bleeding, nausea, pain or fever. Full recovery from open gallbladder surgery may take about four to six weeks.

Some ways to prevent complications after surgery include:

  • Walk frequently to prevent blood clots.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Not lifting more than 10 pounds for four to six weeks.
  • Wash hands before and after touching the area around the wound site.
  • Change dressings as directed.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing that may rub against the wound.
