Ureteroscopy in Türkiye

Ureteroscopy is a procedure to treat kidney stones (solid deposits of minerals and salts) by passing a thin, flexible scope into the bladder and ureters (the way urine travels from the kidneys to the bladder) or to find other problems in that area.

Reasons for the formation of ureteral stones:

There is no main reason for the formation of stones, but there are several factors that may increase the risk of this happening. As the urine contains high levels of calcium, oxalates and uric acid, and it cannot get rid of these crystal-forming materials, in addition to its lack of anti-crystallization materials. These factors combine to create an ideal environment for the formation of stones.

Symptoms of ureteral stones:

Tissue sample The ureteroscopy, which uses a “holmium laser” to break up small kidney stones, takes about 90 minutes.

Advantages of ureteroscopy

Ureteroscopy can treat stones located anywhere in the ureter and kidneys. In addition to treating stones that cannot be seen with x-rays.

Ureteroscopy is not an appropriate treatment for:

  • Patients with large stones: ureteroscopy requires removal of all parts of the stone. Treatment of large stones may result in so many fragments that complete removal is impractical or impossible
  • Patients with a history of urinary tract reconstruction: Patients who have undergone ureteral or bladder reconstruction are not allowed to pass the ureteroscope.

Types of stones:

Determining the type of kidney stones will help determine the factors that led to their formation and may provide clues about how to reduce the risk of infection. These types include:

Calcium stones:

The vast majority of cases of stones are formed, and they are usually in the form of calcium oxalate. Calcium oxalates mean that substance that is made in the liver or absorbed through food, as some fruits, vegetables, nuts, and chocolate contain a high percentage of oxalate. High doses of vitamin D, gastric bypass surgery and metabolic disorders also increase the concentration of oxalate in the urine. It can appear in the form of calcium phosphate. It is common in metabolic conditions and may be associated with some medications used to treat migraines or seizures.

Struvite stone:

These stones are formed as a result of an immune response in the urinary tract, and the size of these stones increases rapidly.

Uric acid stones:

Uric acid stones are formed and developed in patients who lose a lot of fluids due to chronic diarrhea or malabsorption, or those who follow a diet rich in protein, and those who suffer from diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and the genetic factor increases the risk of their formation.

cystine stones:

This type of stone is formed in patients with hereditary cystinuria, a disorder in which a certain amino acid is overproduced by the kidneys.
