Infertility and artificial insemination

When you and your partner talk to a doctor to get medical aid for infertility, the doctor may suggest a technique called “artificial insemination.” It is a simple procedure with few side effects and can help some couples to become pregnant and have children.

Through “artificial insemination,” the doctor inserts the sperm directly into the cervix, fallopian tube, or uterus.

The most common method is intrauterine insemination (IUI).

In this way, insemination takes place when the doctor injects the sperm directly into the uterus.

What is the benefit of intrauterine insemination!!?

It helps make the sperm’s journey shorter to avoid any obstacles that might hinder pregnancy. This method may be the first thing your doctor suggests to treat infertility.

What type of infertility can IVF treat?

It is often used with cases of male infertility to counter various fertility problems. Especially when the sperm count is very low or when the sperm are not strong enough to swim through the cervix and into the fallopian tubes.

And when the problem is female infertility, artificial insemination can be done when there is so-called endometriosis or if there is anything abnormal in the genitals.

If so-called “cervical mucus” is present, this method may also be appropriate. This means that the mucus that surrounds the cervix prevents sperm from entering the uterus and fallopian tubes. IVF allows the sperm to completely pass through the cervical mucus.

Doctors also often suggest IVF when they cannot figure out why a couple is infertile.

What happens during IVF treatment?

The doctor uses ovulation monitors, ultrasounds, or blood tests to make sure that you are ovulating when performing IVF. Next, your partner will need to provide a sample of his or her semen. Usually, the doctor will suggest that the partner avoid sex for two to five days before treatment to make sure he has a high sperm count.

If you are located near the clinic, your partner may be able to collect a semen sample at home. If not, he will do it in a private room. The reason this is useful is that the sperm must be “washed” in the laboratory within one hour of ejaculation.

The process of “washing” the sperm in the laboratory removes chemicals in the semen that may cause discomfort to the woman and increase the chances of pregnancy. Testers liquefy the sperm at room temperature for 30 minutes and add a harmless chemical to separate out the more active sperm. They use a centrifuge to collect the best sperm.

It is then placed in a thin tube called a “catheter” and inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.

IVF is of short duration and relatively painless. Many women describe it as similar to a Pap smear. There may be contractions during the operation and slight bleeding afterwards. Your doctor will probably ask you to lie down for 15 to 45 minutes to give the sperm a chance to get to work. After that, you can return to your usual activities.

In some cases, the doctor uses fertility drugs, such as clomiphene citrate (Clomid), before the procedure. This helps the body to ovulate and produce multiple eggs.

IVF success rates vary among patients, and there are some reasons that make the chances of success less, such as:

  • The woman’s age increased.
  • Poor quality of eggs or sperm
  • The presence of a severe case of “endometriosis”
  • Significant damage to the fallopian tubes, usually due to a long-term infection
  • Fallopian tube blockage.

Other problems of artificial insemination!

This treatment does not benefit all patients.

Some couples try this a few times before getting pregnant, while others may not have any success at all.

Your doctor may suggest trying it at least three to six times with injectable hormones before moving on to another treatment. And if IVF doesn’t help, there are other methods you can try, such as in vitro fertilization with your own or donor eggs.

Make sure to compare costs before choosing your destination for IVF. Prices vary greatly from clinic to clinic. And make sure the offer includes the costs of hormones and any other medications you’ll need, as well as the sperm washing fee. If you are using donor sperm, remember that there will be an additional fee for each dose you use.
