Uterine prolapse treatment in Türkiye

The treatment of uterine prolapse, including what is surgical and non-surgical, depends on the pathological condition, and before we talk about treatment. Let’s get acquainted with the pathological condition of uterine prolapse

What is uterine prolapse?

The uterus (womb) is a muscular structure held in place by pelvic muscles and ligaments. If these muscles or ligaments stretch or become weak, they can no longer support the uterus, causing prolapse.

Uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus prolapses or slips from its normal position into the vagina (birth canal).

Uterine prolapse may be incomplete or complete. Incomplete prolapse occurs when the uterus partially sags into the vagina. Complete prolapse occurs when the uterus drops so low that some tissue protrudes outside the vagina.

What are the symptoms of uterine prolapse?

Women with a slight uterine prolapse may not have any symptoms. Moderate to severe prolapse may cause symptoms, such as:

  • The feeling that you are sitting on a ball
  • vaginal bleeding
  • increased discharge
  • problems with sexual intercourse
  • The uterus, or cervix, protrudes from the vagina
  • Tightening or a heavy feeling in the pelvis
  • Constipation or difficulty passing stool
  • Repeated bladder infections or difficulty emptying the bladder

If you develop these symptoms, you should see your doctor and get treatment right away. Without proper attention, the condition can impair bowel, bladder, and sexual function.

How is uterine prolapse treated?

Treatment is not always necessary for this condition. Unless the prolapse is severe

Non-surgical treatment

  • Weight loss to relieve pressure on the pelvic structures
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects
  • Do  Kegel exercises  , which are pelvic floor exercises that help strengthen the vaginal muscles
  • He wears a breech, which is a device inserted into the vagina that fits over the cervix and helps push the uterus and cervix up and stabilize it.

The use of vaginal estrogens has been well studied and is shown to improve vaginal tissue regeneration and strength. While using vaginal estrogens to help augment other treatment options may be beneficial, it does not by itself reverse the presence of prolapse.

Surgical treatment

Suspension of the uterus or hysterectomy. During uterine suspension, the surgeon returns the uterus to its original position by reattaching the pelvic ligaments or using surgical materials. During a hysterectomy, the surgeon removes the uterus from the body through the abdomen or vagina.

Surgery is often effective, but it is not recommended for women who are planning to have children. Pregnancy and childbirth can place tremendous pressure on the pelvic muscles, which may result in nullification of surgical repairs to the uterus
