Corneal rings transplantation in Türkiye

Corneal rings transplantation is an operation used to treat keratoconus: a degenerative eye disorder characterized by a thin, cone-shaped cornea.

What is keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a degenerative eye condition that involves thinning of the cornea (the transparent front surface of the eye). As a result of thinning, the normal shape of the cornea is distorted and develops into a conical bulge; Which leads to a gradual blurring of vision.

People with keratoconus can have abnormalities in their vision including multiple images, sensitivity to light, and “lines.” The level of visual distortion can vary from patient to patient but if both eyes are affected, keratoconus can negatively affect the ability to read or drive a car.

Keratoconus usually appears between the ages of 16 and 30, and although the exact cause is still unknown; Recent research indicates that there may be a genetic origin. Excessive eye rubbing can also be a contributing risk factor.

People with keratoconus usually wear glasses or hard contact lenses to treat blurry vision. However, if you have severe keratoconus, glasses may not provide good vision and if you suffer from allergies or dry eyes, wearing contact lenses may become a problem.

What is corneal transplantation ?

Corneal rings transplantation

Also known as corneal implants or ring intracorneal flap, this is a surgical treatment for keratoconus. These small, semi-circular, translucent rings are implanted into the cornea.

When placed, they aim to flatten and regularize the shape of the distorted cornea.

Corneal rings transplantation can improve the quality of life for keratoconus patients due to the resulting change in vision that makes eyeglasses and/or contact lenses easier to tolerate.

Corneal rings may also be used in conjunction with a corneal stabilization procedure to further stabilize the cornea.

Corneal rings are removable and replaceable. When the rings are removed, the cornea returns to its original shape.

Who is suitable for this surgery?

Corneal ring surgery is often chosen for patients diagnosed with keratoconus who have visual symptoms related to:

  • Moderate to high level of nearsightedness (myopia)
  • severe astigmatism
  • Irregular astigmatism

How is Corneal rings transplantation performed?

When the patient arrives on the day of the surgery, the doctor will meet again to discuss any other questions or concerns the patient may have regarding the surgery.

The doctor explains how to use the eye drops after surgery and outlines any limitations the patient may have after the particular procedure.

At this point, the patient is given a mild sedative to help him relax during the corneal ring transplantation process. The patient remains awake for the procedure. Just before surgery, the doctor puts anesthetic drops to numb the eye.

A fine tunnel must be created in the cornea to allow the doctor to reach the deeper layers of the cornea where the rings are implanted, and this tunnel is made using a laser.

The doctor places an instrument between the eyelids to keep the eye still while he creates the tunnel using the laser. The patient feels some pressure on the eye for about 30 seconds.

A small instrument is placed between the eyelids to prevent blinking while the doctor implants the rings into the cornea.

After surgery , the patient is given a pair of eye shields to wear to protect the eyes from accidental bumps or bumps while they heal.

The eyes are examined before leaving the clinic and then it is recommended that you go home and have some time to relax. The patient will need someone to drive him home.

The patient takes antibiotic eyedrops and anti-inflammatories for at least a week after surgery to aid in healing and prevent infection. Most patients return to normal activities within about 24 hours after surgery.

What are the risks of corneal rings transplantation?

The risks associated with corneal ring transplantation are low and often only minor if they occur. Infection rates are also very low, which makes corneal ring transplantation a very safe procedure.

But like all surgical or medical procedures, there is always a risk of complications. All known complications will be discussed during the consultation with the doctor.
