Shoulder arthroscopy in Türkiye

Shoulder arthroscopy is a surgery that uses a small camera called an arthroscope to examine or repair tissues in or around the shoulder joint. The arthroscope is inserted through a small cut (incision) in your skin.

What is shoulder arthroscopy?

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and their tendons that form a cuff over the shoulder joint. These muscles and tendons hold the arm at the shoulder joint. This also helps the shoulder move in different directions. The tendons in the rotator cuff can tear when overused or injured.

You will likely receive general anesthesia for this surgery. This means that you will be asleep and unable to feel pain. Or you may have local anesthesia. Your arm and shoulder area will be numbed, so you won’t feel any pain.

How is shoulder arthroscopy performed?

The arthroscope is inserted into your shoulder through a small incision. Where the endoscope is connected to a video screen in the operating room.

Examines all tissues of the shoulder joint and the area above the joint. These tissues include cartilage, bone, tendons, and ligaments.

To repair damaged tissues. The surgeon makes 1 to 3 small incisions and inserts other instruments through them. A muscle, tendon or cartilage tear is repaired and any damaged tissue is removed.

The surgeon may perform one or more of these procedures during the operation:

Rotator cuff treatment

• The edges of the tendon are brought together. Then the tendon is attached to the bone by suturing.
• Small screws (called a suture anchor) are often used to help attach the tendon to the bone.
• Anchors can be made of metal or plastic. They do not need to be removed after surgery.

Shoulder impingement syndrome surgery

• Damaged or inflamed tissues in the area above the shoulder joint are cleaned.
• The ligament called the cartilaginous ligament can be cut.
• The underside of a bone called the acromion may be trimmed. A bony growth (bump) on the underside of the ends often leads to shoulder impingement syndrome. The bump can cause inflammation and pain in your shoulder.

Shoulder instability surgery

• If you have a torn lip, the surgeon will repair it. The healing is the cartilage that lines the edge of the shoulder joint.
• The ligaments that attach to this area will also be repaired.
• A Bankart lesion is a tear in the artery at the bottom of the shoulder joint.
• A SLAP lesion involves the artery and ligament at the top of the shoulder joint.
• At the end of the surgery, the incisions will be closed with stitches and covered with a dressing (bandage). Most surgeons take video screen images during the procedure to show you what they found and the repairs made.
• The surgeon may need to perform an open surgery if there is a lot of damage. Open surgery means that you have a large incision so that the surgeon can access directly into your bones and tissues.
