Shoulder replacement surgery in Türkiye

What is the process of replacing the shoulder joint?

Shoulder replacement surgery involves removing damaged areas of your shoulder and replacing them with artificial parts. The procedure is performed to relieve pain and improve mobility.

You may need a shoulder replacement if you have severe arthritis or a shoulder joint fracture.

Shoulder replacement

Who is a good candidate for shoulder replacement surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery is usually recommended for people who have severe shoulder pain and have found little or no relief from more conservative treatments.

Some conditions that may require a shoulder replacement include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA ). With rheumatoid arthritis, your immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing pain and inflammation.
  • Bone anemia disease. This condition occurs when blood loss occurs to the bone. It can cause damage and pain in the shoulder joint.
  • Broken shoulder. If you severely fracture your shoulder bone, you may need a shoulder replacement to fix it.

Your doctor can help you decide if shoulder replacement surgery is the best option for you.

People who have had shoulder replacement surgery usually feel:

  • Weakness or loss of movement in the shoulder
  • Severe shoulder pain that interferes with daily life
  • Pain while resting or while sleeping
  • Little or no improvement after trying more conservative treatments, such as medication, injections, or physical therapy

How to prepare for shoulder replacement surgery in Türkiye

Several weeks before the procedure, your doctor may suggest a complete physical examination to determine if you are healthy enough to undergo surgery.

You may need to stop taking certain medications two weeks before your shoulder replacement. Some medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and arthritis treatments, can cause a lot of bleeding. Your doctor will also tell you to stop taking the blood thinners.

  • On the day of the procedure, it’s a good idea to wear loose-fitting clothing and a button-up shirt.
  • You’ll likely stay in the hospital for two or three days after surgery.
  • Most people need some help for about six weeks after surgery.

What happens during the surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery takes about two hours. You may receive general anesthesia, which means you will lose consciousness during the procedure, or local anesthesia, which means you will be awake but sedated.

During surgery, doctors replace the damaged “ball” of the joint , known as the humeral head, with a metal shoulder. They also place a plastic surface over the “socket” of the shoulder.

Sometimes, a partial shoulder replacement may be performed. This includes only the joint ball replacement.

After the procedure, you’ll be taken to a recovery room for several hours. When you wake up, you will be taken to the hospital room.

Recovery after shoulder replacement surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery is a major operation, so you will likely experience pain during the recovery period. You may be given pain relievers by injection immediately after the procedure.

About a day after surgery, the doctor or nurse will give you oral medications to relieve discomfort.

Rehabilitation begins immediately, usually on the day of surgery. Your health care staff will drop you off and move you as soon as possible.

After two days, you will be discharged from the hospital. When you leave, your arm will be in a sling, which you will wear for 2 to 4 weeks.

You should be prepared to regain arm function for about a month after surgery. You will need to be careful not to lift any objects heavier than 1 pound. You should also avoid activities that require pushing or pulling.

In general, most people are able to resume pleasant activities of daily living within two to six weeks. You may not be able to drive for about six weeks if you have the surgery on your right shoulder for people who drive on the right side of the road, or your left shoulder for those who drive on the left side of the road.

It is important to perform all of the home exercises your healthcare provider recommends. Over time, you will gain strength in your shoulder.

It will take about six months before you can expect to return to more active activities, such as golf or swimming.

How long does shoulder joint replacement surgery last?

It is difficult to say how long a shoulder replacement will last. Experts estimate that most modern shoulder replacements will last at least 15 to 20 years.

Revision shoulder replacement surgery is rarely needed.
