Trigger finger treatment in Türkiye

What is trigger finger?

Trigger finger is caused by inflammation of the tendons that flex the fingers, causing tenderness and pain in the fingers. This condition limits movement of the finger and can make it difficult to extend and bend the finger.

What are the symptoms of trigger finger?

Common early symptoms include:

  • Long-term soreness at the base of the thumb or other finger
  • A bump around the base of the finger near the palm
  • Pain around the base of the finger
  • Clicking or clicking while moving
  • Stiffness in the finger

If a person with trigger finger does not get treatment, it can progress further. Advanced symptoms include a bent or straightened thumb or “other finger”. In addition, the patient may also not be able to release their finger without using the other hand if they have an advanced case of trigger finger.

Trigger finger symptoms tend to be worse in the morning. The finger will begin to relax and move more easily as the day goes on.

What causes trigger finger?

The fingers have several small bones. Tendons connect these bones to muscles. When the muscles contract, the tendons pull on the bones to move the fingers. Long tendons, called flexor tendons, run from the forearm to the muscles and bones in the hands. The flexor tendons then slide through the flexor tendon sheath, which is like a tendon tunnel. When the tunnel is narrow, the tendon will not be able to move easily.

This is what happens with trigger finger: When the tendon slips through the tight sheath, it becomes irritated and enlarges. And the movement becomes very difficult. The inflammation may cause a bump, which further restricts movement. This results in the finger remaining in a bent position. Where it becomes very difficult to straighten.

Who is at risk of trigger finger?

Some people are more likely to develop trigger finger than others. For example: women are more susceptible than men.

Other risk factors associated with trigger finger include:

  • Age between 40 and 60
  • Diabetes
  • Having hypothyroidism
  • Having rheumatoid arthritis
  • Infection with tuberculosis
  • Performing repetitive activities that can tire the hand, such as playing a musical instrument

How is trigger finger diagnosed?

A doctor can usually diagnose trigger finger with a physical exam and some simple questions about the person’s medical history. And then the doctor listens for the characteristic crackling sound when moving. And looking for the curved finger. He may also ask to open and close the hand. Diagnosis usually does not require x-rays or other imaging tests.

How is trigger finger treated?

home remedies

Treatments depend on the severity of symptoms. Home remedies include:

  • Take a break from repetitive activities for four to six weeks
  • Wearing a brace or splint (medical corset) to restrict movement and rest the hand
  • Use heat or ice to reduce swelling
  • Putting the hand in warm water several times during the day to relax the tendons and muscles
  • Gently stretch the fingers to improve their range of motion

pharmaceutical

Medications may help relieve inflammation. Anti-inflammatory medications include:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Nabro Kissin
  • Prescription anti-inflammatories
  • steroid injection

surgery

If medications and home remedies don’t work, your doctor may recommend surgery. Surgeons perform trigger finger surgery on an outpatient basis. After getting an injection of anesthesia, the surgeon makes a small cut in the palm of the hand and then cuts the taut tendon sheath.

As the tendon sheath heals, the area becomes more flexible, helping the finger to move more easily. Risks of surgery include infection or ineffective surgical results.

It may take from a few weeks to six months to recover from surgery. Doctors recommend physical therapy exercises to relieve postoperative stiffness. As a general rule, once the doctor releases the tendon sheath, the tendon can move freely.

After the surgery: The patient should be able to return to normal life within a few days. The doctor will remove the stitches within 7 to 14 days.
