Endoscopy and endoscopic surgery. It is a flexible, long and thin tube used to examine the internal structures of the human body (organ or internal tissues) in detail. It can be used to perform other tasks, including imaging and minor surgery, and has proven effective in many medical procedures due to its low risk and detailed images of the internal organs of the human body.

Where is endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery used?

Endoscopy is suitable for examining many systems within the human body. These areas include:

Digestive system : esophagus, stomach and duodenum (esophagoscopy). the small intestine (intestinal endoscopy), the large intestine/ colon (colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy), the bile duct, rectum, and anus .

Respiratory system : nose and lower respiratory tract (bronchoscopy).

Ear : otoscopy

Urology : cystoscopy.

Reproductive system (colposcopy ) : cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes.

Through a small incision: such as the abdominal or pelvic cavity , endoscopy into the joint and the thoracic organs.

What is capsule endoscopy?

It’s a piece about the size of a swallowable vitamin pill that contains a tiny, wireless camera that takes thousands of pictures of your digestive tract. Capsule endoscopy is used to visualize the small intestine, an area that is difficult to visualize using standard endoscopy. It is also very useful for examining the small intestinal mucosa and diagnosing Crohn’s disease. The capsule passes through the digestive tract within 24-48 hours.

Preparing for the operation:

The procedure does not require an overnight stay in the hospital and usually only takes about one hour to complete. The person needs to fast for about 12 hours (this varies from one type to another). You can also take laxatives the night before to clean out the digestive system.

The procedure depends somewhat on the reason for the endoscopy and there are three main reasons for an endoscopy:

Verification : It is used to search for causes in the event of suffering from vomiting, abdominal pain, breathing disorders, stomach ulcers, difficulty swallowing, or gastrointestinal bleeding.

Diagnosis confirmation: Endoscopy may be used to perform a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of cancer or other diseases.

Treatment : The endoscope can be used to treat the disease directly, such as cauterizing a bleeding vessel or removing a tumor.

Endoscopy is done without anesthesia or sometimes you may receive a local anesthetic (a numbing spray in the back of your throat) and sometimes combine the endoscopy with another procedure such as an ultrasound exam. It can also be used to place an ultrasound probe near difficult-to-image organs, such as the pancreas .

The use of endoscope in surgery:

Endoscopic techniques have advanced in recent years, allowing some forms of surgery to be performed using a modified endoscope, making the surgery less invasive. Procedures such as gallbladder removal, sealing and ligation of the fallopian tubes and removal of small tumors from the digestive tract or lungs are now common.

Laparoscopic surgery requires only a small incision and can be used for appendectomy, hysterectomy , and prostatectomy. With this technique, patients lose less blood during and after surgery and can recover faster compared to standard surgical procedures.
