What is circumcision?

When is circumcision done?

Circumcision is usually performed in the first day or two after birth, and the procedure becomes more complicated and more dangerous in older children and men.

Generally, the procedure begins with cleaning the penis, then anesthetizing it locally with a small dose of medication or anesthetic cream, then a clamp or ring is placed on the penis, and then the doctor removes the tissue The excess (foreskin) and then a topical antibiotic ointment or Vaseline is applied and it is wrapped with medical gauze.

Full anesthesia can be applied in the case of adult children or men. The circumcision process takes about 5-10 minutes, while adult circumcision takes about an hour, and the patient recovers within 4-7 days. It is also worth paying attention when dealing with infants, where the penis is washed with soap and water only until it is completely cured. The area may look slightly red or bruised, and a little yellow liquid can be seen in the nappy.

It is also important to take a dose of antibiotics if they are prescribed, and pain relievers can be taken. In case of pain, the doctor must be informed. Also, children must be prevented from swimming or showering for at least a week after the operation, and they should avoid riding bicycles and sitting on toys for at least 3 weeks. Caution not to engage in strenuous activities such as running for a period of 4-6 weeks. As for adults, they can start walking and extend the distance a little each day, but they must wait 4 to 6 weeks until they return to activities such as running or lifting weights.

A medical review is also required in the following cases:

Is circumcision necessary?
